My name is Amy. I am a recent graduate of the Genesis learn to run class (December 2016). Here is my story. I had tried on and off to run on my own in the past, but always made the mistake of thinking “more is better” and ended up sidelined with injuries, including a stress fracture that left me in a removable cast for ten weeks. When I began the class last fall, I wasn’t at all sure that I could do it. What I found was that all of the other new people felt just like I did (and we made it). I also have a “hidden illness” – I have systemic lupus, which often affects the joints and other tissues. I think people often look at me and think, “Well, I’m sure it’s easy for her to run, it’s not like she has any health problems or anything”. I can say with certainty that the positive attitude I gained about myself and what I could do physically that I got from this class has helped my mental health immensely, which in turn has undoubtedly positively affected my physical health as well.
The day of my very first race was cold, but otherwise a beautiful day for a run. I had two goals – number one was just to finish! The second goal was to run the entire time, even if it was a slow run; and you know what? I did it!!! It was one of the most wonderful and profound feelings I have ever had. It ranks in the top five all-time greatest moments of my life (and that includes getting married and having a baby). The sense of accomplishment was astronomical for me. Each and every one of you in this class can do it, too. I promise you!! At least three quarters of the battle is mental. You won’t ever be sorry you signed up for this experience!
