I knew in the second mile that it wasn’t my day. I didn’t feel good but it wasn’t terrible. Every runner has those days once in a while but they mostly coming in training, not in racing. With good training and taper we normally go in to a race feeling good.
My first 100 mile attempt has been 3 years in the making. It’s taken me a long time to get my head around the distance but thought I’d broken through. And anyone that has run these long distance events, especially hundreds, would tell you that the heart and mind have to be committed and committed without compromise.
I didn’t make it past the 50 mile mark. Something I normally love to do wasn’t enjoyable almost from the very start and I can’t explain why.
When I first told Caroline I’d signed up for this race she said, “Daddy, I have one piece of advice for you. You’re going to be walking. A LOT.” Very true.
And a couple of days after the race when I told her I might try again next year she just said, “I just hope you have your heart set on it next time.” Again, very true.
I’ve had a hard time writing this up so I decided to tell it. If you care, here’s the video and the password is "Burn".
Here are some memorable pictures starting with my favorite.
I’ve already started lining up pacers and crew for next year if I make it back.
