I will be 58 in October. To me age has always just been a number. I have never dreaded turning old. I am a grandmother of 3 and a mother of 2. So when you ask why are you taking a running class? Anyone can run. You need someone to tell you to run? This is my response:
My mother passed away at the age of 58 of breast cancer. My dad passed away at 60 of heart disease. My husband had a heart attack at the age of 60. I want to stay healthy. I want to move. I want to live a long life. I DON’T want to be the one in the corner sitting that says I can’t. I have been a couch to 5K dropout too many times to count. But this time – this time – I had support, encouragement and training that is tried and true. I can’t explain to others the way the whole class encourages others along. The high fives you receive as you accomplish another milestone. How no one is left behind to run alone. How the times when you feel like I’m done someone comes up behind you and says good job and it gives you that little boost to keep going. When you think I can’t go another step in my head I start counting 1, 2, 3...
I can’t say enough about what I have learned from this class and how our coach Jay at Teays Valley has been so encouraging, positive and an awesome leader. When the Hope Run approached I was very nervous as I had never RAN 20 minutes straight – my running always consisted of walking more than running. I was greeted by my coach and told you can do this – you are ready. When Coach Matt began his talk a calming effect came over me.
I am looking forward to the 5K race. My goal is to RUN the entire race. I know I will see red shirts who will have my back and encourage me. I know I won’t cross that finish line alone. I won’t be the fastest but I will finish.
